I have a client age 66 that's on her husband health insurance plan. She is wanting to switch to Medicare but hasn't enrolled into Part B yet. Does she have to wait till January to enroll and start her Part B benefits in July ?

No as long as she still has crediable coverage.

from Med & you handbook

Special Enrollment Period
If you didn’t sign up for Part A and/or Part B when you were first
eligible because you’re covered under a group health plan based on
current employment (your own, a spouse’s, or a family member’s if
you’re disabled), you can sign up for Part A and/or Part B:
■■Anytime you’re still covered by the group health plan
■■During the 8-month period that begins the month after the
employment ends or the coverage ends, whichever happens first

As Taz said, she can enroll as long as she has had credible coverage.

What I would advise her to do:

  • Contact her benefits administrator for a letter stating she has had credible coverage
  • Take it to the local social security office and tell them she is ready to leave her group plan and enroll in Medicare Part B (present the letter)
  • Social security will enroll her and can even print out proof that her part B will begin on X date
  • Once she has that letter, you can enroll her into a Medicare plan
