I must admit, for those of us who don't believe that either major party deserves control of both the White House and Congress, this is getting funny.
On one side we have the Democrats, who have fallen directly into the standard political trap of assuming that, because they dominated the last elections, they have been given a "mandate" to cram 100% of their ideological agenda down the throats of America. For our "own good". Whether we like it or not.
Predictably, the Democrats look at Tuesday's electoral losses as a clear indication that they have not been liberal enough with their efforts. They have convinced themselves that America is demanding to be mothered for the rest of our pathetic lives, and that only Democrats can help us.
On the other side we have the Republicans, who are doing absolutely everything they can to waste this golden opportunity. I remain absolutely stunned that so much stock is being put into Sarah Palin (good gawd), and that the party is so devoid of leadership that no one has thought to pull some leaders together and come up with a coherent and cohesive message to deliver to the public as the Democrats are wobbling.
The GOP's "strategy" appears to be beating themselves into submission before taking on the Democrats, which really sounds like a fabulous way to take advantage of the Democrats' weaknesses.
So, rather than let this madness get to me, I'm trying to enjoy the show. It's like watching a Fellini movie - clowns, horses, stuff flying through the air, no one really seems to know what's going on, least of all the viewer. Wish me luck.
I'm laughing. To keep from crying.
