Stand Alone Accident Plans and Critical IllnessGo to Top
I am in California. I like to sell HSA's out here but rarely sell the one deductible plan by Assurant do to price here. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good stand alone accident plan and or critical illness I can offer my clients. I usually sell Nationwide Health Plans HSA here or Pacificare new HSA which is part of UHC? Any help would be appreciated it.

I'd like to 'bump' this up again because I might have need for an accident plan for a client in CA. We want to get her 14 year old daughter a HDHP but since she plays sports, we also want to get her a stand-alone accident plan.
Al and Mark,
I have one through Select Company that I have not sold yet. They gave me the web site below but I have not marketed it at all. What I do like about this plan and web site is that the accident plan limitations are described right on the web site.
Many of these accident plan sites out there look really really hokey. AHCO is an example of that. Plus, they're not available in many states including mine (CT). Also, who is the underwriter, what are the exclusions etc. If I were a consumer, I don't think I'd buy this because it lacks a legitimate feel.
If I could find an accident plan that had less activity exclusions, I'd be very interested. The problem is that many don't explain exclusions, who the underwriter is or not available in every state.

DMiller90,
The accident plan on my site is also underwritten by Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Co. As you can see on my site, limitations are listed which include:
*Skuba diving
*Surfing
*Skate Boarding (a biggie exclusion for kids)
*Roller skating
*Participation or practice in any professional, intercollegiate or club sports (vague) activity except as specifically provided.
*Ultra light aircraft, hang gliding, parachuting or bungi-cord jumping.
*Skiing (another biggie exclusion)
*Any injury sustained fom any two- or three- or four-wheeled recreational motor/engine driven vehicle or snowmobile or all terrain vehcile (ATV)
Does your Guarantee Trust Life Accident plan have these same exclusions?
I am particularly wary of the skiing, skate boarding and "club sports" exclusions.
DMiller,
Sorry, I posted mine before you posted the spot for exclusions. The policy form number is the same:
Policy Form Number GP-1200, GTL - Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company
For some reason, the exclusions on the GAC site don't mention the Skate Boarding, Roller Skating, Scuba Diving, Professional/Intercollegiate/Club Sports exclusions.
However, since the certificate form is the same then we can conclude the limitations listed above on my last post do apply.
This brings me back to my main point: is there an accident plan that is stand alone that is as good or close to as good as the Assurant Secure Solutions that does not have most of these limitations?

I use two accident plans that I have found to be useful. I use ahco's accident plan that does not have any exclusions on skateboarding, skiing or sports which is underwritted by U.S. Life and I also use another accident plan marketed by cashdoctor.com that is underwritten by Markel Insurance which has a stand alone critical illness which is underwritten by AIG anyone that is interested can email me.

Have you read both policies and is the CI policy different from the one marketed through Assurant.....

I have read both policies I have attached two pdf files of the accident plan and critical illness plan marketed by cashdoctor.com. I am not sure if it is the same CI as assurant as for their select suite solutions
Is the value really there for a stand alone accident policy when its usually cheaper to endorse an accident rider to the health policy?
I understand your point but assurant is overpriced in california and not very competitve. So I sell they other plans that have HSA's and they don't have an accident rider's with the plan that is why I have to sell a stand alone. If assurant was competetive I would sell more I have a few clients on assurant plans and have sold all of them with suite-solutions which is why I got the idea of looking for stand alone accident and critical illness to package with my other carriers since they don't have accident rider coverage with the plans.
Here is an example of assurant prices in california
For a 5000 one deductible for a 31 year old it is 140 without suite solutions.
With another carrier 102 dollars a month 1750 deductible HDHP
Look at the difference in price and the deductible.

I don't know why Assurant bothers to recruit agents in CA because they are a non-player. Both Blues (they compete in CA) and Aetna and Health Net have them beat every which way... price, network, deduct., OOP-Max, and Rx. I've not met one agent who has ever written an Assurant policy here. I can't think of why anyone would!

You didn't even mention the one that blows them all away in the HSA market which is Nationwide and that was the carrier in my above example for 102 dollar for a 31 year old for a 1750 Deductible HSA plan. The best blue cross can do is a 3500 deductible the cost is 85 dollars a month why would I double my expsoure for 17 dollars a month sounds like a no brainer. Also most people sell blue cross. If there already on blue cross what do you do?
Pitch Health Net, Aetna, probably I would guess.
Al would like to talk to you about are great state of california and what you do. PM me when you get a chance so we can chat.

I never think of Nationwide a health player in CA mainly because I know them as a P&C firm. I assumed you had to be captive with them? No?
I've never known anyone to have their health plans (in IFP). Maybe they are great... I just don't know about their networks, their claims payment policies, or their underwriting.
I put all my biz with either the two blues or aetna. I don't like Health Net, Kaiser, or Pacificare... for different reasons per carrier.
Al, you are missing the boat of you don't look at Nationwide. Their network is terrific and they have the best value in HSA and copay plans.
The biggest advantage is when you speak with someone who is currently insured, you can likely offer a good alternative. And most of these people are with Blue Cross or Blue Shield. By working with Nationwide, you can make a compelling reason for these folks to at least look at a better plan.
I write almost no other carrier other than Nationwide although my quote engine has all companies to review.

I took a look.... and liked what I saw. I called the toll-free number on website for contracting. Called twice. Got voice message from same person twice. In past experience if a company can't handle agent inquiries for licensing, they can't handle agent requests on apps, claims, etc. I left a message (once). Will be interesting to see if she calls me back.
