Makes me want to have another stimulus progam. If one is good, why not two?

Love the Clunker program. Let's pay people to buy stuff. Man, that is some sophisticated economic approach right there. What are you going to do for an encore. Oh the program has ended. Nevermind. Maybe I can get in on the new-RV program to help Elkhart.

With the holiday weekend coming up I think that this would be an excellent time for Mr. and Mrs. Obama to move out of the White House as their services are no longer needed.

If they want to pick out a few DVD's from the White House gift store as a small token of our appreciation then I suppose that could be okay.

Otherwise, get your respective arses out.

I hear the Queen of England has quite a number of DVDs that she can't use....

Another perspective:

"Obama, while possessing many of the campaigning gifts of these presidents, has shown no ability to govern at all. This is a very dangerous situation for our nation. Our leader is a man whose ignorance, in many areas of history and policy, is simply appalling. He is rather like the "President in the Plastic Bubble." Obama's entire life has been insulated from any sense of reality of the nation he governs."

American Thinker: The Not Ready for Prime Time President

Time for President Obama to write another book or two. Alternatively, have Mr. Alinsky ghostwrite them. I bet good ol' Saul's been pretty busy these days. If Obama were to leave office tomorrow, Alinsky's book would be ready for printing within 2 days.

Precisely.

Speaking of the Brits, I just read that the Tories are 20 points ahead in the polls with Cameron favored. You know they have to hold an election before June.

Socialism is not doing well there because of taxes and the huge, huge deficit. However, no one, even the Tories will campaign on cutting the NHS even though the costs are totally out of control and are a major part of the problem. Once it is created then it becomes a third rail, just as the public option would move both Medicare and the public option over to the untouchable category where not even the conservatives can cut them.

Lessons for Americans. Sigh.

Re: Stimulus Exceeds Expectations             Go to Top

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline. A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons / year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.
5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption.
And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.
So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.
How good a deal was that ???

They'll probably do a better job with health care though -- NOT!!

The flaw in these calculations is that it assumes that the demand for gasoline is "inelastic." In other words demand does not go up and down based on price. So they calculate the cost for someone who drives 12,000 a year and then compare that to 12,000 at better mileage and then assume that the difference is just unused fuel. Problem is we know that is not true. Demand decreases when gas price is up (or cost is up due to poor mileage) and increases when it is down. You got 20 bucks a week to spend on gas. You used to have a clunker. Now you get better mileage so instead of seeing the girlfriend twice a week, it's three times now and there goes the calculated savings. Could happen.

In my experience, academics and accountants live somewhere other than the "real world."

Their world is entirely predictable. There is no chaos, fraud or waste. There are no lying politicians who promise what they know cannot be delivered.

In my world, when an engineer/accountant type comes in to see me with their mechanical pencil and quadrille pad, I know there is no amount of logic that will persuade them off whatever path they have decided to take.

Let us also not forget that the states receive gasoline taxes based on the gallon amount sold. If the states were looking for revenue reductions, then this was truly the Perfect Plan.

To date, though, there hasn't been a state government which has been looking to reduce revenues.

Smarter moves have never been made by stupider people.

So, in the New Green World, we'll save gas, electricity, wood, paper, plastics, food, glaciers, cold fronts, etc... Now just what do they propose to do with the refinery workers, power plant workers, lumber workers, millworkers, bottlers, farmers and processors, global warming afficianados, and meteorologist's whom will be displaced??? What will Obama and Gore do when the world is perfect and their services are no longer needed?
