Stupid Question             Go to Top

Forgive me if this has been asked before. I am a newbie and there are many pages of threads. So I thought I'd save myself some time and just post my question. I have been contacted by Bankers Conseco Life Insurance here in my home town. What's it like to work for them? How are you paid? Any info you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks for letting me be part of your Forum.

Conseco Files for Bankruptcy

Conseco Files for Bankruptcy

Long teetering on the brink, insurance and finance giant Conseco has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It's the third-largest corporate bankruptcy filing in history. The company collapsed under a huge debt load resulting from a rash of acquisitions in the 1990s, including the $6 billion purchase of Green Tree, the nation's largest lender to mobile-home buyers.

WOW! Thanks for that info. I am new to insurance sales. Was in car sales for over ten years and was considering this move. I guess I should run away fast 'ey? Any company you recommend? Thanks again.

BTW, I should probably say I live in a small town in the Northeast, NY. I really need money. I left car sales when business changed owners and their pay policy changed. I am working overnights at Wal*** now and hate it. About to lose our home. I need to make some money and find a decent steady income. Can anybody help me?

Insurance may not be the answer. You need steady income right now. Maybe best to find a second job...put some money in the bank and put off a sales-related job option for a while.

Just my opinion.

Taz -

As you'll see on the board many times over, insurance is probably one of the worse professions to get into if you need money today. It's a good business long term, but it definitely is not quick cash. Even if the stars align, the first check you'll see is likely 60 days out. The first serious check may be 6 months out, depending on how carriers work in your state.

An alternative is to go work for an agency somewhere, have them pay you a salary while you learn the business. Probably not the best pay, but, it would give you a paycheck.

Put bluntly, as an employee, you are in survival mode, exchanging your work for a paycheck, probably never getting really ahead, but hopefully not falling behind. As an insurance agent, you have to shift to thrival mode, giving up a lot of security (usually called a paycheck) and make an investment into the future to get to the point where residual income is paying the bills, new sales are paying for the fun stuff (especially true in P&C). This takes time, perhaps years, to acheive.

Things are tough all over, don't let it get you down.
I am having a hard time too, no one is interested in buying insurance right now, or any thing else that I do.
I was just reading in my local paper today that our unemployment rate is near 14%. Thats Change We Can Believe In!

Conseco?? Why would you use such bad language?? Please don't ever say that word again.

Worse company I've ever dealt with and that is saying a lot.

I know I must sound like a broken record.

Your statement " no one is interested in buying insurance right now" is probably correct with the exception of Medicare Supplement insurance.

There has never, in the last sixteen years, been a time when the economy has ever had any kind of impact on my ability to sell Med Supps. I believe we are on the brink of seeing the largest explosion of Med Supp sales since the original Standardized Med Supp Plans were introduced in 1990.

In my humble opinion, Med Supps are the easiest kind of insurance to prospect for, the easiest to generate your own leads for and the easiest kind of insurance to sell. I make that statement based on sixteen years of experience of having sold not only Med Supps but life, Final Expense, LTC and "underage" health insurance.

I'm sure others may have different thoughts on the subject but all I can do is relate my personal experience.

Frank I understand, but I don't have extra funds to invest in something else right now. I am licensed in Alabama and here C-Plus from BCBS is the dominant provider. I have had opportunities to sell Med Supps before, but have not seen anything to compete with them. I guess I just don't understand enough about them. BTW the reason I had asked about direct leads is a friend of mine selling FE said he would help me by buying leads for us. I do however like you method better. I believe the concept of cross selling is a good one, I also know for it to be sucessful I would have to be licensed in other states and that too would be more cost.
I will be talking to you.

Thanks and God Bless!

We need to talk. It is too difficult, for me, to try to explain everything by typing here. I see no need for you to be licensed in other states. There is plenty of business in Alabama for you to handle.

I'm not sure you currently have enough accurate information to make a well-informed decision.

check your State's dept. of insurance's complaint ratio, in Ohio they are number 1, not a good thing!

I want to thank you all for your information and help with this. After reading all your responses and further research, I have decided to stick it out at my current job for a little while longer and see what happens. Hopefully, something will open up for me soon. Thanks again all!
