I just started using this app on my Android Samsung Galaxy Tab. Very impressed. The app is free. The app also has an on-screen widget - it's pretty slick. It may be available for the apple users out there...not sure.

You can have it automatically track your miles via the gps system built in to it - but on long trips that can kill your battery.
It automatically calculates the miles for you, places it into a spreadsheet which you can e-mail to yourself at the end of the month - it calculates your mileage deduction.
