[COLOR=#ffffff]Education[/COLOR] "I have indeed two great measures at heart, without which no republic can maintain itself in strength: 1. That of general education, to enable every man to judge for himself what will secure or endanger his freedom. 2. To divide every county into hundreds, of such size that all the children of each will be within reach of a central school in it." Thomas Jefferson Source: in a letter to John Tyler, 1810. The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Memorial Edition 12:393
"Is it a right or a duty in society to take care of their infant members in opposition to the will of the parent? How far does this right and duty extend? --to guard the life of the infant, his property, his instruction, his morals? The Roman father was supreme in all these: we draw a line, but where? --public sentiment does not seem to have traced it precisely... It is better to tolerate the rare instance of a parent refusing to let his child be educated, than to shock the common feelings and ideas by the forcible asportation and education of the infant against the will of the father... What is proposed... is to remove the objection of expense, by offering education gratis, and to strengthen parental excitement by the disfranchisement of his child while uneducated. Society has certainly a right to disavow him whom they offer, and are permitted to qualify for the duties of a citizen. If we do not force instruction, let us at least strengthen the motives to receive it when offered." Thomas Jefferson Source: Note to Elementary School Act, 1817

I graduated from what is today still called "Mr. Jefferson's University." The motto of the institution was written by him:
"This institution will be based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind. For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it."
However, when any graduate thinks about about what they "got" from the place, they remember the poem called "The Honor Men" because (back then... I was class of '69) we had an honor code that worked well, was self enforced, and served us as a model for later life:
The Honor Men
The University of Virginia writes her highest degree on the souls of her sons [and daughters]. The parchment page of scholarship -- the colored ribbon of society -- the jeweled emblem of a fraternity -- the orange symbol of athletic prowess -- all these a year hence, will be at the best mementos of happy hours -- like the withered flower a woman presses between the pages of a book for sentiments sake.
But...If you live a long, long time and hold honesty of conscience above honesty of purse; and turn aside without ostentation to aid the weak; and treasure ideals more than raw ambition; and track no man to his undeserved hurt. And pursue no [person] to [their] tears; and love the beauty of noble music and mist – veiled mountains and blossoming valleys and great monuments – if you live a long time and keeping the faith in all the things hour by hour, still see that the sun gilds your path with real gold and that the moon floats in dream silver:
Then...Remember the purple shadows of the lawn, the majesty of the colonnades, and the dream of your youth, you may say in reverence thankfulness:
I have worn the honors of Honor. I graduated from Virginia"
