Social marketing has become a focus for me. Twitter is a great tool for building relationships and connected with people.

Twitter is not just about "what are you doing now" but about giving you the opportunity to share your expertise with large groups of people (and you can target your audience to your specific market).

Some Twitter Tips:

1. When you first sign up try to get your name or some version of your name for branding purposes. If you can't use your business name or something that people can relate you to your business or industry. Getting both is a good idea too.

2. You MUST have a picture. Your own picture is best but a logo is OK too.

3. Engage in conversation. Use the @ symbol to talk directly to other people. (DM is a private message)

4. RT (retweet) this is a great compliment. When you retweet something it means that you liked what that person said so you sent it out to all of your followers.

5. Following people--who you follow is your choice. If you want to find industry specific people to follow you can use Twitter Search Put in keywords and look at who's talking about what your interested in and follow them.

6. Followers- people who choose to follow you. You can block someone if they become abusive.

7. DON"T SPAM. Twitter is a place to build relationships not pimp your links. It is definitely OK to send links out periodically (we are marketing after all!) but keep it proportional to the good content and value you add too.

8. Fill in your Bio. If you don't have a website URL link to your Facebook or LinkedIn profile.

9. Add value--sent out tips, good information, join in a conversation.

10. Be yourself, be transparent, KLT Factor (be someone people can know, like and trust). Be interesting and interested!

Social marketing courses helped me and working with people who do it for a living. This stuff works.

Please feel free to follow me. Look at who I am following and follow those people if they fit your for you. DM (or pm me) if you have any Twitter questions.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day!

We've just started pushing our blog posts (foresightpub on Twitter) to Twitter. If you maintain a blog you can use twitterfeed.com to sync your blog posts to a Twitter account automatically.

IMO it cannot hurt to use Twitter, but I'm not expecting to generate any business from it. If we do, great.

I've noticed website traffic up since using Twitter (I track w/Google Analytics), but no sales. Fine by me, I love blogging about my passion.

Chris, that is an great tip list! Thanks so much.

Does anyone use twhirl or tweetdeck? I like tweetdeck for the reason that the noise it randomly makes annoys everyone else in the office.

Hope my laptop does'nt get smashed while I'm at lunch one day...

You can turn off the noise. I used to use Twhirl, but I found EventBox. It's for Macs only, so only supreme Mac beings need apply.

I use TweetDeck. Have Twirl up occassionally. TweetDeck has a tremendous amount of capabilities if you use it correctly. The grouping makes a big difference on keeping up with connecting with industry and people you want to connect with.

LOL on the sound! Twirl is pretty funny too! You can look at PowerTwitter and Twitter Bar too.

One thing...DO NOT fall into the "get 19,346 followers in 24 hours" garbage. Twitter (as all social medial marketing and networking tools) is a place to build relationships. That's how you develop business. Might be a little more work but it will reap much better rewards.

Again, doors open if anyone needs help.

BTW, if you have a blog you can also you plugings like Twitter Tools, etc. to auto out your posts.

Re: Twitter Anyone?             Go to Top

I am getting quite a few followers of late. Not sure why since I don't really know how to work this thing.

Seems I am getting a lot of folks who want to promote their motivational crap. I have also noted some wine vendors. Perhaps they are doing a search and finding my last name (Vineyard) and just assuming I am an oenophile.

I also have a rapper. That one is out of left field.

I think I heard recently that Ashton Kutcher has a larger following than anyone. If I post a picture of Demi's butt on Twitter will I have more followers too?

It's been less than 24 hours since we launched our Twitter profile, and we already have more than 100 followers.

Twitter has immense potential to bring traffic, although conversion rate would not be satisfactory enough.

You can follow our profile too, as you might have seen the Twitter button on top of the forum pages.

Great tips here Chris. We have to agree, any social media tool isn't just about creating a profile and spamming products. You HAVE to be engaged, make friends, talk about things that are related to your industry but not necessarily about your business. Comment on what others are saying, retweet, and every so often share links back to say, your blog, if it provides good, informative content.

Getting into SM is easy, maintaining it is not. It requires time and should be considered another component of your overall business strategy. You're representing your brand, your company, your products.

WTF, you're into sadomasochism (SM)? I don't believe the insurance industry has reached that point yet!

Great tip!

I have just signed up with twitter yesteday, it didn't take me long to figure out how to use it. It's pretty basic, just a one liner message and its going to be broadcast to all your followers. The challenge I guess is to gain potential followers who are really interested with your business.

Could this actually be the downfall of Twitter? That is, you set up an account and there is probably somebody out there with an app that picks up on new accounts and instantly 'follows' them. The following day you're bombarded with ways to make a million dollars in a day...

Re: Twitter Anyone?             Go to Top

I have used Twitter for a few months. Don't see the fascination in it.

Why should I care if you chose a powdered doughnut over a cinnamon for breakfast? Or that your kid finally learned to use the potty this morning?

I have no idea why some folks are following me. I am following a handful of people but given the types of messages I get (tweets?) I am not sure I want to follow anyone else.

Re: Twitter Anyone?             Go to Top

Once again most of agents underestimate the power of social media.

We all know that Twitter isn't a service that has quality content, but it's potential is hugely under-rated.

The possibilities to get a good amount of traffic are very realistic, because it is easy for your tweets to become viral.
Say you just tweeted something interesting, that catches user attention.
Out of 500 of your followers, probably 50 of them will click on the link. Now out of those 50 if only 5 of them retweet your tweet, you have a whole new bunch of people coming to your website without being your followers.. And this cycle continues for a long time.

I've seen links on Twiter which crossed 20.000 visits from Twitter.
