Typical Day for a Health Insurance Agent             Go to Top

Hey folks,

Part four in my "Stupid Question Series".

Give me a typical day/week of a Health Insurance agent (new or experienced) who is making a living selling health policies. I know there will be differences between an Independent Agent and a Captive one, but you indies gimme your day, you captives, gimme yours.

It starts at 7:30 reviewing applications that were faxed the night before, after you called it a day. Preparing those to send to the carrier. Checking your call list for the people that you planned to call that day. Your phone rings and its a referral from 2 months ago, and you try to remember who they are and who referred them, next an older client calls and raises hell about something having to do with a wrongly filed claim. You have their Life, Health, annuity business, and they own your ass for as long as needed. You continue to make and return calls. You keep this up all day long and eat lunch at 5:30. Finish up around 7:30-8:00 PM Monday through Thursday. Work as much as you can on Friday.

I get out of bed and proscratinate. Sometimes I don't proscratinate but stay in bed. Either way, at the end of the day I go to bed.

Oh yeah, I play golf once in awhile.

Gotta love this job!

Thanks!!

You are independent?

What about you folks who are using the online quote and online lead companies? Are you spending a lot of your time leafing through those leads and making calls? I'm kinda trying to figure out how you folks are making these tools work for you. Those werent around 16 years ago when I was out door-knocking or calling on returned lead cards the company gave me. I'll assume that those can keep you busy?

You serious? Your writing FIVE apps per day? (Dont be pulling my leg now, I can pull my own.... middle one).

Seriously though.... are you working from home exclusively? I've heard of it, even way back in the early 90's when I was in the biz, but I've never seen how it was actually done.

I personally prefer to get out and visit at very least a few clients or prospects a couple times per day, but thats just me.

I think when he mentioned at 7:15 the alarm is ringing, it is waking him up from the nightmare of running 4 miles in 30 minutes.... or is it the lawsuit of calling before 9 am? Or is it from writing to many apps?

Anyway, it's a bit of who shot J.R., it's all a dream.

Nice. Of course I'm sure you have to have a lot of those leads to make them actually produce applications. I cant imagine them being anywhere near as effective as personally telemarketed leads or door knocks. But then..... I've been known to be wrong once or twice in the past 43 years.

9:30 a.m. I get up and smoke a cigarette
9:45 a.m. I get on here and see what kindof smart ass comments Rick made the night before.

12:00 I think about cold calling but then figure people are probably eating lunch so I get on Absolute poker and play a freeroll.

2:00 p.m. I get on here to see if RIck has made it out of bed yet.

5:00 pm I think about making cold calls again but then I figure that people are probably watching the news and do not want to be interuppted. SO I smoke some more cigarettes and maybe go fishing or play golf.

8:00 pm I am kicking myself in the butt because I was out playing around to long and could not make any appts for tomorrow.

1:00 am I go to bed.

Re: Typical Day for a Health Insurance Agent             Go to Top

Well, I'll tell you what a NON-effective, 20-something, drunkazzed agent for AGLA did back in the early 90's:

Got out of bed, went to the orifice. Printed out some quotes for some welfare folks on my debit route, got in the car and went to the first debit route neighborhood, dodged the bullets while running to the first apartment in the project homes (Hall Manor - Harrisburg, PA), collected premium, started some small-talk leading up to insurance needs (which often ended up with me trying to convince them that their Life Insurance WAS more important than those 40's they were going to buy with that government check), assessed their needs and took notes, went to the next house, dodging bullets again and being more observant since I had a briefcase full of premium cash by noon.

Went home, took a nap, "DID" my girlfriend, talked some smack with my neighbors for an hour or so, back out on the route to collect premiums and chat about Insurance needs for all of the children in the household (not including the young roaches born recently in the cupboard). Quit around 3:00pm, went to the bar, got drunk, then went home to "DO" the girlfriend again.

Harrisburg Pa???

How ironic. I'm a CD grad (75). My parents still live off Linglestown Rd. We go back about 1-2x per year. Usually eat at Italian Delight one night and Progess Grille the next night.

You and Rick in bed together. Too much information here. This board has always abided by the "Don't ask, don't tell" rule, just as in the military.

"Don't ask, don't tell" is the common term for the U.S. military policy which implements Pub.L. 103-160 (10 U.S.C. § 654). Unless one of the numerous exceptions from 10 U.S.C. § 654(b) applies, the policy prohibits anyone who "demonstrate(s) a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts" from serving in the armed forces of the United States, because it "would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability." The act prohibits any homosexual or bisexual person from disclosing his or her sexual orientation, or from speaking about any homosexual relationships, including marriages or other familial attributes, while serving in the United States armed forces. The policy also requires that as long as gay or bisexual men and women in the military hide their sexual orientation, commanders are not allowed to investigate their sexuality. The net effect of this policy is that the military does not take an official stance against gay or bisexual desire; one must engage in open homosexual acts to commit a punishable offense.

Please respect the rules.

Re: Typical Day for a Health Insurance Agent             Go to Top

Life agents have it a little easier.

I wake up to something definitely NOT Folgers. Take a leisurely stroll down to the gate and get out the overnight packages from my personal-sized FedEx box. Breathe in the nice salt air and breeze as I walk back up to the house, noticing the awesome colors of the sunrise.

Once back inside, I open the packages. There are three or four "regular" signed life apps, generated from my AI Artificially Intelligent websites; a couple for 200k, half a mil, and one for 2 mil. AP is around 36k. I'm in the "top of the box" so all told, about 140+% commish. Woo Hoo!

Couple of other FedEx packages from my attorney and CPA partners who have recommended large policies to their clients to fit in their financial plans. One is a large SP, plus a couple other 5mil set up as trusts, AP looks to be around 120K total. Woo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo!

Takes about 15 minutes to look over and sign and stuff into overnight envelopes to their various destinations. Then I refresh my coffee, stroll once again down to the gate, and throw them in the FedEx box.

Done. Total elapsed time: 30 minutes

Now, nice breakfast on the lanai, then walk the beach, maybe take in some golf or fishing later, work out in the gym. But the best parttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt tttttttttttttttttttttt

Wha???? Oh, it's late, I must be sleep-typing (and dreaming at that).

Oh well. Back to bed.

CD? Me too! Class of 82. Have brothers who graduated in 87, 86, 81, 78, and 79.

You were there back in the great days of Coach Sheiler. Progress Grille is an excellent restaurant.

I refer to that city as Harrishole now.

Depends on what you mean by effective.

Closing ratio's mean nothing to me. Do I have to talk to more folks over the phone to make a sale vs belly to belly? Sure. How many? I have no idea.

Closing ratio's don't pay the bills. ROI does.

Can you close more people belly to belly vs over the phone?

If you are any good, yes.

But how many people can you actually see during a day/week in a closing situation?

A lot less than you can talk to by phone.

I did belly to belly sales for over 20 years before discovering I could be much more productive, spend less time on the road (and in the air), have more family and free time by using phone, email and internet to earn a living.

If you have 43 years in the business you beat me by 10 years. Congratulations.

You may have had some of my teachers. Mr. Barton? Although I think he died. Mrs. Minchoff? Mr. Lightfoot was a good guy. Skip Thorn may have retired before you were there.

I don't recognize Coach Sheiler and I should remember all of the coaches. Are you talking about CD East or CD?

And I assume you don't live there any more.

Hey, corporate, I was an agent for AGLA in the early 1990's. We had an agent here in Austin who was friends with a mgr from PA who dated Sharon Stone at one point. You know the mgr I speak of? ha ha I think he ended up in California. But I think Sharon Stone was from PA.
