I guess it's out with Humana and in with UHC.
I was captive with Humana and had a Walmart kiosk when Part D rolled out and
MA became available again in my area. About the only time I had a lot of activity was during the AEP and then toward the end of the OEP. It was definitely worthwhile at that time, but we were also doing seminars twice a week under the old rules as well and Humana was also publicizing them heavily with direct mail. In my market, we were also basically the only game in town when it came to
MA, with the exception of Sterling, which wasn't very active at the time.
At this point, I would guess that it's probably not worth your time since there is not the massive market of people looking to enroll in Part D that there was in 2005-2006.
IMO there is just not the urgency now that there was back then, and even then some Wal-Marts were dead while others did quite well. But YMMV (somewhat) depending on the market. You may be able to pick up a few T65's here and there and others who had their
MA plan pull out or are very dissatisfied with their current plan. But realize that you will only be able to sit there and wait for people to approach you.
With the UHC name, you can also expect to get approached by people about their group plans, etc. with various problems with it. If you are contracted with UHC for underage health, you could pick up some clients that way, provided they can be underwritten.
To be effective you would likely need to be there consistently at a certain time, like 8-12 weekdays (a big part of being there is generating interest via word of mouth) and also forge a good relationship with the pharmacy, which can be a source of leads if people come in asking about Part D, etc.
Also, keep in mind that a high percentage of those you do talk to won't be a "one call close." You'll get some of that with PDP, but I don't think I wrote too many
MA's while in Wal-Mart with all of the distractions. They either came to a seminar or we scheduled a follow-up in home appointment, and occasionally both. A supp is much simpler and may be doable with someone who has a little time to talk.
