If you are in PA, Ohio is an obvious choice.

The only state with a FREE non resident license also.

You should work your home state first and learn what you are doing if you are new before you venture to multiple states.

Would it be easier also to concentrate on one or two carriers at first, until you figure out what you are doing, and then go from there?

Another question I have is face to face vs. telephone when you are starting out?

I have sales experience just not in insurance, so it's a whole new learning process. I know you have a pretty big operation, how do you bring your newbies along?

I never sold face to face.

I only have 3 primary carriers, and a few for specialty stuff.

I concentrate on a basically 3 good companies.

Training and recruiting and employee retention and problems is really the biggest issue. Very difficult to manage.

You will have to know the local market.

Example: In Kansas City, Coventry One has the lowest rates for PPO and Humana has the lowest HSA rates. However, Coventry One does not have N Kansas City Hospital in network, which is the main hospital north of the river.

Now, if you called someone out here and they were talking about being N of the river, would you know what they are talking about? You would have to know that they could use the Northland St Lukes Hospital or Liberty in stead.

You could loose a lot of prospects for being non local.

That pretty much covers it. Humana, at times, in certain areas, can be competitive.
