Gotcha. I never liked the Audi because of the unreliability factor. Could not justify paying that much for something that was poorly engineered. What I mean by that is if they can't get at least one or two cars to rate well on Consumer Reports, then I won't consider it. Too many good vehicles to choose from.
A Range Rover is well, just a Range Rover. They don't change them dudes but about once every decade or so do they?
My last SUV was the Lexus LX470. I can highly recommend that, it was a wonderful vehicle, although a bit heavy.

HaHa, probably true. I bought my Lincoln in 2003 about a month before I got out of the military for about 8K. You're the one that got me thinking about the S class when you brought up the prices of a used 7 series. I was planning on buying a car anyways so I might as well shoot for one of my dream cars. Don't worry, I'll let you wash it if you're nice.
If I was going to spend 6 figures on a car it had better be a Winnebago or an Aston Martin DB9. Personally, I would probably have more fun taking a month off and driving the Bago around the country.

Dang thing was a PITA to clean because the windex would drip down on my silk sheets so I had to get rid of it.
MacDaddy, thank you so much for uploading that file. That is the coolest thing I have seen. They are reasonably priced and you can actually test drive them here Ariel Atom Experience - Ariel Atom Experience

Spend some extended seat time in an M3 or an M5 and report back about BMW...you'll be hooked for life I promise. I like the bigger cars(S class) from Merc though, at least looks wise.

Yeah I know, but hope in the seat in a Mercedes S63 AMG or any Mercedes AMG for that matter and you will think twice about the M3 and M5...

Z-8. Then you can forget the Benz. You can get an S-class anything in a hour. They're a dime a dozen. If you pay $20,000 over sticker and wait 2 years you "might" get a Z8.
We had our only Z8 (each Beemer dealership is allotted ONE per year) surrounded by ropes. You didn't touch it or sit in it. You looked at it. The person who ended up buying it wanted to test drive it. The owner laughed. Yeah....right. When the check clears come pick it up.

My father in law has an SL 55, and while I love its power, it can't hold a candle to the BMW's for handling/steering dynamics. No one has them beat.
I have also done the AMG events at Lime Rock and have had seat time in the E55 and SLK55...insane power, very plush, just somewhat benign in the handling arena, and for me I would rahter give up some power for handling. Plus I am one of those guys that feel like an auto tranny is the antichrist in cars with uber-power. But that's just me, it's all about what the buyer/driver likes best.

There is a black Z8 owner about 3 miles from me and he recently let his 17 year old daughtger drive it and I watched as she almost got T boned coming out of the post office! Avoided disaster luckily...
I love the Z8...E39 M5 engine in a stunningly beautiful car and yes, very rare. I will admit that I think the current SL class from Mercedes are some of the most beautifully designed cars ever but I'd take a Z8 over pretty much any other 'vert out there. Maybe not a Carrera GT...

Agreed. I made a goal when I was a teenager that I would either get a S Class or SL Class. I'm too young for a convertible so I'm holding off on the SL class until I have my mid-life crisis.....

My problem with an S-class or even a M5 is no "wow" factor. You need to know about cars to understand you're driving next to a M5 or AMG Benz. Most people have no clue. If I'm gonna dump a crap load of money into a car I want the "wow" factor. Even the same with a 7 series - no wow factor at all. To the uneducated they can see a 750 and think "$40,000?"
If I buy a high performance car I was "DAMN!" when people see it.

I would have to disagree strongly that an M5, M3, etc doesn't have a "wow factor". Even non car nuts would gather around the M3's I have owned and admire it, etc. However, I could care less what onlookers think about the looks as long as the car provides me with exceptional performance at a reasonable price. That being said, it is all about what you, the driver. desires most. Many people who buy more expensive cars want only that "wow factor" you speak of and that's cool if that's what you want. I personally just feel BMW builds the best overall "bang for the buck" ride, all things considered.
Obviously these cars are not in the same class but these days there are so many cars from BMW/Mercedes/Audi that closely match overall performance of the big guns from Porsche, Ferrari, etc that to me the only reason I could see buying an exotic would be to say "Hey look, I have a Ferrari!"
