Well, it may be too late for anyone to benefit from this, but if you haven't disabled "Automatic Updates" in XP, your PC already has sp3 downloaded. You may be having some difficulty with freezing, hanging, or slow operation if you haven't commanded it to install.

This is what happened to me yesterday. I noticed the above problems, and again today. At the same time saw the icon in the bottom task bar showing update at 0%, and not moving, so I went to the Update site and disabled "Automatic Updates". Fixed that sucker!

Next, getting bolder, decided to manually download sp3. Went without a hitch! Everything's back to working normally.

Note: Remember to backup and create a restore point first. This is not mentioned by Microsoft Update until after the download (15 min @ 2500kbps).

BTW... total time: 30 min at 2500kpbs (dsl).
