"A former Spartanburg insurance executive was sentenced to 87 months in prison Tuesday for embezzling almost $1 million in church insurance plan premiums.

Federal Judge Henry Herlong sentenced William Worthy to seven years and three months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Worthy faced 87 months to 108 months in prison after pleading guilty in October. He was also ordered to pay restitution to victims, but prosecutors are still working to determine the amount."

"....At one time, Cauthen represented Worthy and the two had since become romantically involved and discussed taking a trip to the Bahamas and Costa Rica so Worthy wouldn't have to face the charges, Worthy's former attorney told Herlong during a hearing last year."

"The judge also denied Worthy's request to “self-report” to federal prison at a later date so he could spend time with his wife and five children and get cancer treatment for head lesions from a Charleston specialist. Herlong pointed out that Worthy had canceled an appointment last spring to treat the malignancy. The judge said he had contacted the U.S. Marshals Service and they assured him he would be treated once he was in the prison system.“It's too bad you didn't get it taken care of back then, but that was your choice,” Herlong said."
