Good afternoon,

First post here as I am working on opening an independent after years of being a captive. I have been evaluating the different AMS platforms and have narrowed it down to Epic vs Ezlynx.

Our agencies are located inside car dealerships and we speak to every customer who is purchasing a new car to do an insurance review and we also talk with many of the service customers. We will be writing heavily PL to this market. We are looking for something that has thorough reporting and tracking with strong automation capacity.

We do however, also want to write commercial package policies for all of the dealerships, and other local body shops/mechanic shops in the business group. We will also be looking to get our foot in the door with the aviation industry. We are working on having a dedicated agent to service customers of a local FBO that offers sales, service and detailing operations for individuals/business operating air craft.

Given the connections we have to these industries I would imagine we would be writing at least $1-2MM new business in PL a year and approximately $350-500K in new CL business.

We would also as we are trained and capable like to do the health plans/benefits for these companies as well as act as retirement planners for the employees (potentially administer their 401(K)) as well.

From my perspective:
Ezlynx is cheaper, and "easier" to use and looks "pretty."
Applied Epic has much more functionality and data, but takes a lot to get it to work right.

It would appear from what I have learned, that EzLynx may be the easiest solution for the first 1-2 years until we are deeper into commercial and other lines. But I almost feel like its worth it to spend the first couple years becoming adept at the system so once we start expanding we don't have to learn a new system and new products. I would appreciate feedback on my thoughts, and am open to suggestions on systems outside of these two. Just arrived at these two looking at popularity data and from word of mouth from successful (semi) agencies.

Our agency uses Applied Epic, primarily doing commercial P&C. It has a great deal of functionality, but is not easy to configure and Applied does not provide much support for getting things configured to your liking.

We do have personal lines agents in our office, but they don't even use the rater in Epic because it's never been configured properly for our agency.

Additionally, Epic interfaces with Outlook, but our agency uses googles suite and it will not interface directly with gmail, so you're forced to have an outlook client on the computers you want to link to.

It works well for commercial lines and many carriers do downloads through IVANs now, but be prepared to invest heavily in learning the software if you're wanting to configure reports or automate anything

So you are primarily a PL agency.

I suggest, respectfully, that you spend these years trying to stay in business and not overthink the AMS system. Almost any AMS system is better than none.

Most start up agencies fail. In the P&C world often they fail to understand access to markets. Just my two cents.

Yes, getting access to markets has definitely proven to be a challenge. Nowcerts appears to be the best balance between capabilities and cost, as we have picked up a transportation specialist.

I did quite a bit of research looking for the ever elusive "perfect" AMS. It didnt exist but I settled on Ezlynx. It has its shortcomings as every AMS seems too. I was a little more interested in Applied Epic but they are geared more toward the corporate side of things from my understanding and have priced themselves out of the "Small business" market.

Hawksoft has a lot to offer but I am not a fan of using an external rater. I prefer it be integrated in to the AMS. Currently im looking to find a better way to post payments to carriers. There is a service offered by Ezlynx called "Applied Pay" but the fees are a bit excessive in my opinion and selling the highest rates in the country are hard enough as it is. If you have any questions about Ezlynx that I may be able to answer feel free to reach out.
