i'm fairly certain it is a requirement to remain contracted with most carriers

maybe an FMO like @Todd King can confirm?

Of course there's no other reason you would need e&o insurance.

Some carriers just require EO for you to be an appointed agent. Other companies do not

Most of the MAPD companies require E&O. Because you have to stay appointed to get the renewals, you will need to maintain E&O.
