I know this is a very old thread. That said, I like the concept of knocking down fortress thinking.

Here's a tip. The smart EJ guys don't knock until they get 25 clients from cold door knocking.

Try this method: talk to the people who work on their yards. They will know people on the block. Don't ask for their business, ask for their help.

Briefly explain what you do. Make it on how you help your clients such as, "I help with retirement planning"

Then ask who you should talk to on the block. "Is anyone on the street just turning 50?"

Now you have a list of referrals you can go to and say the garden lady sent you. Congrats, you now have a warm lead.
