If I do a status update and tell all my friends about my website, does that help my page ranking at all or not so much?

the only way it will help is if you get them to like/share your website link. so it's a good idea to have social media buttons on your site so people can easily share/retweet your link.
there's no direct evidence that this helps with rankings, but there is a lot of correlation data that says it definitely helps.

even if it doesn't help, that kind of stuff is indexed by google. my tweets and fbook updates show up for a lot of long tail keyword searches

I think it has an effect. I've been referring to it as social proof and "like" velocity. If a site is popular wouldn't it have likes and retweets as well as links?
