ahrefs.com published a study earlier this year looking at the question "How long does it take to rank in Google?" It's worth a read, and worth sharing:
A few key points:
- Only 5.7% of new pages make it to top 10 for one keyword within a year
- 0.3% of pages rank for a high volume keyword in a year
- A domain’s previous authority (they call it "Domain Rank") is key to ranking (a new domain has no authority)
The bottom line is that if you are kicking back waiting for the leads to come pouring in via organic search, you are going to be waiting for a long time. The 5.7% that rank within a year don't do it by accident.
Very few insurance agent sites are going to build up the authority to rank for the highly competitive keywords. Instead, focus on niche long tail keywords. And if you want traffic and leads from your site within the next year in a manner that you can control, SEO
isn't where you should start.
