As I See It: Understanding Medicare Advantage

I had a lady in my office today who had brain surgery on the MAPD I sold her and she said that the insurance couldn't have been any better.

I had a guy on a different MAPD plan today complain because of a $175 copay he had to pay (summary of benefits says: $175!)

His logic and reason for the complaint? "I asked the doctor to run a test to check me out just to be sure - she didn't think it was necessary, but did it anyway just because I was concerned. I didn't know it was going to cost me anything!! It came back negative! I wasted $175!!!":D

But in south premium they do
I have drs lawyers dentists on mapd
IRMAA & premiums & drugs
A PPO with no premium a moop and all those ancillaries very attractive
I’m having a tough time showing Supp
No one in south Fl wants to pay!

What is a South premium? that's not fair, I can't offer that here in TN.
LOL, JK

Funny how he feels ripped off because the doctor did not find any major life-threatening illness.

That's akin to me getting to the end of my six-month auto insurance premium cycle and saying to everyone "I got ripped off! I paid that premium and didn't wreck the car, or die in a pile of twisted metal!!"

There are agents who will criticize me for buying High Deductible Medigap because I am paying for insurance that won't pay anything.

Then they're paying a $2,700 deductible.

And THERE is another significant problem in the way some agents think about, talk about, and present, high deductible Medigap plans.

That is NOT necessarily true.

(LD is a non-agent Medicare Beneficiary and (High Deductible) Medigap plan holder)

True. Some do feel that way. But I have no problem with an HD supplement if that's what the client wants. I have sold exactly zero of those in the last 13 years, however. But I would not criticize those who do choose to buy them.

It just seems like if you're willing to self-insure that much risk (the deductible), why not get an MAPD and enjoy all the extra benefits? Some have max OOP amounts that are pretty darn close to the HD deductibles, and offer $thousands in extras not covered by OM.

(since I'm not licensed, I get to use the bad 4 letter word)

Setting aside a prior approval issue for the moment, do those "free" plans come without any co-pays or co-insurance for emergency room visits, specialist follow-ups, or significant or major surgeries?
