The "Hub" is nothing more than a router? I can't believe it's not storing info, because the Treasury will need to verify and back up their Subsidy decisions. They have to keep all the data used to reach the decision on each person in a database.

The hub does not need to store data, and yes, it probably is just a router. If the hub can be hacked the bad guys can use that to access data in all the participating agencies.

FWIW, a rather large and well known University, medical school and hospital allowed access to all data at the schools and hospital through a consumer gateway. Personal information including PHI was out there for the world to access.

This hole was well known and even exploited on hacker forums and had existed for quite some time. The hole was closed off a few months ago after one of their IT security people found chatter about it on a hacker site.

The school and hospital have no idea how long they had been vulnerable, or how many records had been accessed (if any).

One can safely assume if the hole was on a user forum someone was using that information.

ANYTHING ONLINE IS PUBLIC.

Rule #1 of the internet. If anyone can access it on the internet, everyone can access it.

There is a target a mile wide one all of these rush-job government systems that transmit millions of people worth of sensitive data. It's literally a goldmine, and hackers are breaking out their picks. Day 1 it will be hacked, PHI will be leaked, SSN's will be sold, identities will be stolen, and websites/servers will be attacked and shut down.

Saying information "is not stored in the hub" is like a bank saying "money isn't stored in the hallway". Anyone with half a brain will utilize the aforementioned hallway to access the vault (or snag stuff in the hallway going to and from the vault.)
