I Welcome Advice and Guidance

33 years old looking for a career change. I have been reading this forum for a week now and joined up just to post for some feedback.

I have 10 years of sales experience. Much of that has been in leadership roles (trainer, supervisor, etc) and most of my experience is phone sales. I have no problems with cold calling, door knocking, etc. I have a strong work ethic and I genuinely enjoy meeting new people.

I like insurance for a couple reasons:

- Provide a product/service that genuinely helps people
- Be my own boss
- Residual income!

I like P&C because the law requires everyone have auto and home, no shortage of potential clients, etc. I like Life because I strongly believe in helping to provide for people if/when they need it most.

My question to those of you with experience is.. What AREA should I start in?

Or rather.. If you could go back in time and give yourself advice when you started, what would it be?

Open to ANY feedback and/or suggestions. All is appreciated.

Edit 04/24 @11:16am : I am in the Central Florida area.

You can get started in life insurance without experience. You can learn and be your own boss. Even easier to work with Medicare plans.

P&C will require you to be part of an agency for at least awhile. It's almost impossible to go out on your own immediately.

If you're willing to door knock, you might consider something that other don't generally sell; Critical Illness Insurance. Mainly "door knocking" to small business. And cancer insurance might be a decent door opener as well.

Lastly, in what part of the country do you live?

Rick,

I appreciate the feedback on P&C. It does seem quite a daunting task to start from scratch. SO MUCH to learn!

I live in Florida.

As a lifelong Florida resident and having owned an agency in south Florida which was around for 40 years when I joined and now having opened a brand new p and c agency with a zero book of business, it is tough to do business in Florida. There are some options. I did tons and tons of research mid 2013 before settling on the right way to go.
What part of Florida are you in?

I am in Orlando.

With no experience in the business. I am starting to see that P&C might not be the best way to start off. I am leaning more towards Life at this point as I think it would be a great way to start. As I become more knowledgeable and financially well-off, I could expand into other arenas.

One good thing is that I have experience creating web sites and I have done SEO for a few years in the past. I could generate some extra leads this way as well.

Well, just an update...

Just finished my pre-licensing class for Florida 2-14 (Life Incl Variable Annuity). I get fingerprinted on Monday and my state exam is scheduled as well. Feeling very confident!

I have 3 websites partially running. 1 is complete and the other 2, well... we're getting there. Thanks to all that have helped me in various threads across the forums.

Do you also have a P&C license because you previously stated that in your previous post. If you are looking to start in Florida in the P&C side email me at [email protected] and I can point you in the right direction as I was in your situation a few years ago. Good luck.

No, I am just getting the life & annuity license. Thank you though!

Congrats on getting your license! With a life and annuity license...I know where I'd start, but I just a lowly Simplified Issue Whole Life Specialist, targeting the Senior Market...that's what I tell the neighbors! You'll see it phrased around here as Final Expense

I'd recommend to go ahead and get your Accident/Sickness license as well and have that option available to you.

If you're dedicated, you can probably make any line work for you. I like the simplicity of FE...buy leads, set appointments, make money, save a lot of it because of the chargebacks...wash, rinse, repeat.

SAI and Tins have me convinced to go into Med Sups, so I'll be adding that to my book over the next couple of months. It seems like long-term it will build a bigger renewal base, which will feed my alcoholism and my gambling addiction!

Agreed (kinda) on MS, but lots of service work, and every 3 to 5 years your moving your clients to a different company, in time you would need a full time secretary.
