Building Key Words

Can anyone point me in the direction of building key words myself?

I use LongTailPro to find all my keywords. They have great training on using their software as well. (affiliate link)

Google Adwords Keyword Tool (free) works to get SOME initial data about number of searches and competition, but not to analyze the competition to see if targeting that keyword is viable.

Ultimate Niche Finder and Long Tail Pro are 2 of my favorites for running keyword research. There is also market samurai, but for some reason lately it's not working right for me, and it's happened before, so I find it hard to recommend.

Those are good tools, Another good tool is Backlink(s) Miner which grabs a competitor's back-links from SEOMOZ and will tell you all kind's of stats, so once you know which keywords your going after, you will see practically what kind of links are needed to rank.

Whats the difference? Why is asking better than building?

Links you typically build:
- profile links
- forum/blog comment links
- directory links

Links you typically ask for:
- editorial links
- resource links
- guest posting

So how do you go after keywords with links?

Do I look for an article that has the keywords that I am wanting?

I thought the last Panda devalued guest blogging?

LOL r u serious? cant be

Yep I am serious, I want to have a better understanding of link building. If I can learn to do it myself and still use an SEO firm then I can help additional keywords.
