P&C Agent Wanting to Sell Some Life

I just started an independent P&C agency in California. I plan on keeping it pretty small for the first few years and work from home. I am doing mostly P&C but I am life licensed and I have my variable contracts lic (series 6&63). I was so excited to get selling on the P&C side that I really havent done any research about the life. Again, main focus is P&C but I do bring life up to every client I meet and on average write 1-3 life policies a month (thats what I was doing as a captive).

Some of my questions are: do I need a separate E&O policy for life? Do you get direct appointments for life companies or are there wholesalers like in on the P&C side? For someone only writing 24 policies a year what would you recommend? I just started looking into this, if you guys can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks,

I havent found an E&O that covers P&C and Life. If you find it let me know. I'm sure there is one out there.

Contracts are mostly through Wholesalers.

If Life is not your primary line, you need an IMO that can offer advice on which product to use for each circumstance. We offer a quote engine where you can enter the details and get quotes with a key stroke.

Our P&C agents like our non-med life products.

If you have the Fireman's Fund policy from CITA it covers both:

"Insurance Agents E&O for agencies ~ WE COVER P&C AND L&H SALES UNDER ONE POLICY!!! "

Welcome to the life business! It is exciting to broaden your horizons.

You do need to affiliate with a wholesaler. I find that they vary greatly in the level of service they can provide you. I personally have opted for one that provides concierge services. They assign underwriters and case managers to my cases so I can keep focused on sales and service.

Any wholesaler you choose can help you get E & O coverage.

You should also make sure you have available the expertise of professional life insurance sales people. Your clients consider you an authority in P&C. You need to inspire the same level of confidence when you’re promoting other products. Many times this means actually bringing in a life insurance specialist to make sure the job gets done right.

Please PM me if you need more info.

My E&O has always covered both. Have been with Fireman's Fund and now with Utica. Others have quoted and cover both. You'll find that your P&C customers will be receptive to doing life with you as well. Always easier to sell to a current customer. You can approach any home customers for mortgage protection.
