Michael Kitces attempts to explain why CFP Professionals must state "Professionals" or "Certificant" after using the CFP acronym or in long-form and comparing it to a CPA license.
He believes it to be an attempt to preserve the CFP trademark.
Why CFP Professionals Can't Just Say They're A CFP
I'm a ChFC and The American College lets me call myself that, as long as I do so appropriately. I'm guessing that's the difference between a college provided designation, versus having a designation provided by a "Board of Standards"? Or they really just like micro-managing their designees (probably the more correct answer).
