How does one avoid the pitfalls of failing? I am very hard working to a fault. I have a great resume. I want to build my own business. I am looking for a great company to start with and build a future. I am looking for mentor that wants to have a junior that is hard work.

Product knowledge and believe in what you sell. The more you know about the product the easier it is to educate your client in to why they "need" it and not just make a sales pitch.

I would start by looking for an IA with several large carriers that will give you a commission contract. If things work out down the road try buying in to the business or venture out on your own.

Finding a mentor is the critical part and is also very hard to find.
