I've never really used a list. Mainly, I just do it as backup activity when the weather is pretty. I'll pick an apartment complex with well kept front porches and wreaths on the doors.

Check to make sure there isn't an ordinance in your city that prohibits this or requires a permit.

Very true. I live in a fairly small town, and I've been kicked out of many apartment complexes for this. Luckily, most people are pretty friendly about it as long as you just apologize and smile.

Interesting, as I am preparing to do just that.

Care to elaborate on what works and what doesnt...methodologies, etc?

It seems to me that an in person relaxed approach could work. The opportunity to meet people and offer them your services face to face surely works better than mail outs?
