Apparently they can...

"Did you know that in some states, if you miss one tax payment, local politicians will take your home, sell it, and keep all the profits?

Really.

Tawanda Hall was behind on her taxes. She was on a payment plan but had missed $900. She didn't expect Southfield, Michigan, to take her entire house because of that. It was worth $286,000 more than what she owed."

The State Took Her Home Because She Missed $900 in Property Taxes
Tawanda Hall's house was worth $286,000 more than her overdue tax bill. There was nothing she could do about it.

Its a tax-lien sale. Some states take the house themselves. Others allow an investor to pay the back taxes, then the homeowner must repay the investor (plus interest) or they lose the property to them.

I once knew a guy who lost his house over a $3k tax lien. That home is probably worth around $400k today.

I find this VERY HARD to believe. Governments should not have the power to recover 'MORE THAN THEY'RE OWED'...

What states are we talking about??

... In Florida, any overage from a Tax Deed Sale is given to the original Owner!---- Florida does not make a profit from someone else's misfortune. ~
